Antigua Sunrise is a small quilt that commemorates my visit to the island of Antigua during my annual spring break trip with my daughter India. During my search for different and unusual fabric, I discovered the official fabric of the island. It is a bright orange, red and green plaid. I used this fabric on the back of the quilt, and that's how the quilt got its name.

Antigua Sunrise measures 31 x 22 inches. Black sashing and binding accent the African prints. It is embellished with charms, beads and inspirational words. A hanging sleeve is attached for easy display.

When I inquired about the inspiration for the room, I was told that her husband Willie had spent some time in Africa. While there, according to Willie, he was made a Zulu warrior! Well, every warrior needs a queen, so Zulu Queen was born.

Zulu Queen measures 47 x 60 inches. It is embellished with items personal to Paula, and was presented to her July 24, 2007 at my retirement party.

The police theme is carried out on the front of the quilt with embroiderd words sich as "protect and serve", "courage," and "protecting the innocent."

Blanche is also a soror of Delta Sigma Theta. The quilt is further personalized for Blanche with symbols of the sorority.

The Greatest Friendship is a special quilt made for Michael, a very special person in my life. In 1966 I was part of the first wave of the integration of public schools in Crossett, AR. I was in the 7th grade and had previously attended segregated schools. During that turbulent time when some questioned whether blacks and whites should be “mixing”, I made a lifelong friend. Over 30 years later, we re-connected when he called me up out of the blue to ask if it would be okay if he nominated me for consideration for the Winthrop Rockefeller Foundation Board of Directors. Our time on that Board together turned out to be really special. When he rotated off the Board this month, I presented him with The Greatest Friendship.

The Greatest Friendship has great meaning for the two of us. There are lots of personal clues to our lives in this quilt including Norman Junior High School, our friendly race to be valedictorian of the class of 1972, and, of course, the Winthrop Rockefeller Foundation.

I know Michael will treasure The Greatest Friendship as a small token of my thanks for the indelible impression he made on my life.

2006Madame Justice, Number 51 of the 100 African Canvas Memory Quilt series was auctioned October 12, 2006 at the Georgia Association of Black Women Attorneys (GABWA) Annual Honors and Auction program. The quilt was a commemorative piece in honor of the organization's 25th anniversary. The auction benefits GABWA's scholarship fund which assists deserving female law students.

Madame Justice measures 31 x 26 inches. It features four panels with black sashing and binding. A book shelf print is on the back of the quilt. The embellishments reflect the occasion. The words “You Go Girl!” “GABWA”, “Sisterhood” and other inspirational words are stitched into the quilt.

The quilt was sold for $600.00 and ended up in a loving home. I am so proud to be able to play a small part in a deserving female law student’s success.

Rory, who happens to be a lawyer, loves basketball more than anything. That is why the quilt has a basketball theme. The back of the quilt is a bright blue basketball motif with the basketball goal on fire. The theme is carried forward on the front of the quilt with basketball appliqué. The fact that Rory is a lawyer could not be ignored, so you will find the word “courthouse” on the front of the quilt as well. The binding and the sashing are blue.

It will be auctioned October 7, 2006 as part of the 75th Anniversary celebration of the Clark Atlanta University Sigma Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta sorority. Proceeds from the sale benefit the Sigma Chapter’s scholarship fund.

Delta Sisterhood is number 40/100 of the African Canvas Memory Quilt™ series, It measures 31 inches x 41 inches. The back of the quilt is red, of course, with rows and rows of tiny hearts conveying the love of the sisterhood. The binding and sashing are also red.

What would a Delta quilt be without an elephant? Not as strong. So a red elephant figures prominently on the front of the quilt. Inspirational words such as “sisterhood” as well as, beads, charms and buttons adorn the front of the quilt.

Music Girl, #13/100 was created for my daughter India. Happily, I can report that 8th grade Honors Day at her school brought new memorabilia that can be added to her quilt. We added academic pins and the band director's award. The state-wide Latin competition yielded a fourth place ribbon for Latin grammar.

Hopefully, you are continuing to add to your memory quilt. Recently, after I broke the chain on a treasured mother's Day necklace, I added the heart-shaped charm that said "Mom" to my personal memory quilt. The necklace may be broken, but I will always have the charm on my quilt to remind me of how lucky I am to be a Mom.

In the Brown Sugar Stitchers Quilt Guild, each member is required to make a name tag. Ribbons earned for finished quilts are prominently displayed on the name tag. Over the years I just never got around to making my name tag. Meanwhile, I diligently collected my ribbons for finished quilts. As time went by, I recognized an unexpected dilemma. How could I make a name tag big enough for all of my ribbons? The African Canvas Memory Quilt Series™ provided the answer. I gathered up all my ribbons, show buttons, and other memorabilia and Quilting Queen was born. Quilting Queen hangs proudly in my quilting studio, a constant reminder of all my quilt babies who long ago found loving homes.

Music Girl was designed especially for my 13-year-old daughter India. India loves music more than anything. Her memory quilt had to have a musical theme. The backing is a black, gold and silver musical notes fabric on a cream background. The binding and sashing is made from black fabric with a musical note motif.

Often India wears her hair in braids because she is a girl so busy she doesn’t have time for hair! That is why braided ribbons adorn the bottom of her memory quilt.

Did I say busy? India has adorned her quilt with various school awards and memorabilia including sports ribbons, a clarinet charm, school ID’s and her very special 7th Grade Service Award.

Music Girl is a large quilt measuring 64 x 75 inches dominating one wall of India’s study. Music Girl is #13/100 of the African Canvas Memory Quilt™ series and was finished in August, 2005.

The names for the African Canvas Memory Quilt™ series are derived from the fabric on the back of the quilt. The fabric on the back of Village Women, Part 1 and Part 2 depicts African women going about their normal activities in the village. Some have baskets on their head.

Village Women Part 1 was donated to the Carrie Steele Pitts Orphanage for sale at a fund raising auction. I have no idea who bought it or for how much.

Village Women Part 1 measures 32 x36 inches. It has brown sashing and binding. It was finished in June, 2005 and became #7/100 of the African Canvas Memory Quilt™ series.

Out of Africa is #3/100 of the African Canvas Memory Quilt™ series. I thought this was going to be the last African coin quilt I would ever make. I only made it to use up the African scraps I had left over.

I ultimately decided to enter it in the gift game at the office Christmas party. As luck would have it, one of my best friends won it, and happily took it home. It is not embellished and was truly intended to be a scrap quilt. Out of Africa measures 64 x 64 inches.

African Salvation

When a co-worker returned from a missionary trip to Africa, she brought me a yard of African fabric. I thought the least that I could do was make her a quilt. I chose for the back of her quilt a fabric that had the word “faith” as its focus. I named it African Salvation. It is not embellished, but the fabric purchased on her trip to Africa is in the quilt, and the faith fabric serves as an inspirational reminder of her mission to Africa. It is #2/100 of the African Canvas Memory Quilt series.

The quilt that started the African Canvas Memory Quilt™ series is called From Africa to Atlanta By Way of Arkansas. The quilt was originally made as project of the Brown Sugar Stitchers Quilt Guild. All guild members exchanged African fabrics and made an African coin quilt to show at the guild’s annual tea.

After making the quilt, I thought it would be fun to embellish it. Almost subconsciously, I started adding things that were significant to my life. My Mom’s wrist watch, my sorority symbol, a clarinet charm and a pin that said “India’s Mom” made my quilt special. Once I got started, I couldn’t stop. I still add to it. I love looking at the quilt because it makes me smile.

From Africa to Atlanta By Way of Arkansas became #1/100 of the African Canvas Memory Quilt series. It is a permanent part of my quilt collection.
